The iPhone's processor and software are at the heart of correctly interpreting touchscreen input. The capacitive material sends the raw touch location data to the iPhone's processor. The processor uses software located in the iPhone's memory to interpret the raw data into commands and gestures. Here's what happens:

In the nanoseconds between when you touch the iPhone screen and when the display reacts, some calculations and signals are sent from the touchscreen to the software.

1. Signals are transmitted from the touch screen to the processor in the form of electrical pulses.

2. The processor uses software to analyze the data and determine the characteristics of each touch. This includes the size, shape and location of the affected area on the screen. If necessary, the processor groups touches with similar characteristics. If you move your finger, the processor calculates the difference between the start and end of the touch.

3. The processor uses its gesture interpretation software to determine the gesture you are making. It combines your body movements with information about which app you're using and what that app is doing when you touch the screen.

4. The processor passes your instruction to the program it is using. It also sends commands to the iPhone's screen and other hardware if necessary. If the raw data doesn't match any applicable gesture or command, iPhone treats it as an extraneous touch.

All of these steps happen in nanoseconds - you can see the screen change based on your input almost instantly. This process allows you to access and use all of your iPhone's apps with your fingers.
